The chess players & Park Royal reach a new arrangement
Agreement reached so longstanding tradition continues at shopping centre
West Vancouver, BC, April 24, 2016 – The individual chess players and Park Royal are pleased to announce that they have come to an arrangement regarding chess playing at the centre. Together, a new location has been chosen where individuals can continue to play chess with Park Royal’s support. The new location is on the second level of Park Royal South across from Osaka and The Brick and will be able to accommodate as many as 28 players at a time.
Park Royal appreciates the community’s feedback regarding the day-to-day operations of the centre. Park Royal chose to conduct negotiations with the chess players privately in the hopes that a mutually agreeable arrangement could be made, and are grateful to everyone who reached out to provide their point of view and wants them to know that their comments were taken to heart. Park Royal is glad that those efforts have been successful and that an agreement has been made that works for both parties.
“We’re happy to be staying at Park Royal where we’ve gathered for so many years. Now we can keep playing the game we love with the support of the centre,” says Terry Fellows a long time player at Park Royal and one of the individuals representing the players. “We have worked closely with the Park Royal team through this process. This is about more than playing a game, it’s about a location to socialize and build community amongst friends, new and old”.
In addition, Park Royal and the chess players have agreed to work together to host a joint community chess event at Park Royal in 2016.
Two-time World Youth Chess Championship competitor Ashley Tapp added “I am very happy to see Park Royal’s ongoing commitment to chess and look forward to working with them on an event to get more youth involved in the game at Park Royal.” Ashley was thankful for being invited to the meetings and having her voice heard.
“We are glad we have been able to keep a long-standing tradition going,” said Karen Donald, General Manager of Park Royal.
Rick Amantea, Vice President, Community Partnerships and Development at Park Royal, adds, “Our company’s core values have always been to embrace diversity and to create a vibrant community environment. We are pleased to have reached an agreement that will see chess continued to be played at Park Royal in a manner that works for both parties.”
Park Royal continues to be a longstanding supporter of and contributor to the West Vancouver
community. The centre supports over 100 registered charities and not-for profit groups. The support is both monetary and in-kind in many forms such as free space, equipment loans, free marketing, event parking and more.
